Visa Requirement

In order to visit Nanjing and attend the joint AME/APNME/JME 2011 Conference, you will need to have a valid visa for the People's Republic of China. Obtaining a visa for entry into China is not usually difficult, but it is important to allow enough time for processing your application. Visa requirements may vary according to your country and the passport you are using, and you should inform yourself about what is needed for the country in which you live. Usually it is necessary for your passport to be valid for at least six months after your intended departure from China and you need to get the visa not more than 3 months before you wish to enter China. Information on visas can be obtained from the website of your local Chinese Embassy or Consulate: http://www.fmprc.gov.cn/eng/wjb/zwjg/2490/.

If you need a formal invitation letter signed by Nanjing Normal University, please send your request to:

Fax: +86 025 8372 1092

  • In order for your request for an invitation letter to be processed, you have to register for the conference first and send a copy of your registration confirmation page with your request.

  • Since it will take 1 week to issue an official invitation letter in support of a visa application, we advise you to send your request for an invitation letter, and complete all forms, before 21 July 2011.

Travel to NICC

  • We advise all conference participants to fly to Nanjing Lukou International Airport, via Beijing, Hong Kong or Shanghai (see below).

  • Participants are advised to take a taxi from Nanjing airport to Nanjing International Conference Hotel (“NICC”) which will take about 50 minutes. The cost will be around 150 Yuan (RMB). You will need cash in Yuan for this.

  • Please download the map showing the route between Nanjing Airport and the NICC [download].

  • It should be possible for some regional participants from Japan (Tokyo and Fukuoka), Korea, Taiwan (Taipei) (and also those coming from Frankfurt on Lufthansa) to fly direct to the new Hongqiao Airport Shanghai (Terminal 1 international). There is a direct link from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 (domestic) from where it is possible to take the train direct to Nanjing Train Station. Directions are well signed in English. It should take about 90 minutes by train. There are several trains per hour. There is an automated ticket purchasing system in English in the train station. Times and tickets are also available on the Internet: http://www.seat61.com/China.htm From Nanjing Train Station take a taxi to the NICC, which will cost about 20 Yuan. Note that the train station may be crowded and that catching a taxi there is most likely to involve queuing.

  • Please print out the directions below, written in Chinese characters, to give to the taxi driver. The taxi driver is unlikely to speak English.

Trip Advice

  • The average temperature in late October in Nanjing is normally around 16 degrees Celsius (61 degrees Fahrenheit). It may be cool in the evening and early morning, so participants should bring long-sleeved clothing such as a light windbreaker and jacket. Participants are advised to check the prevailing temperature and weather conditions shortly before their departure and prepare accordingly as this is the time of year when the temperature can change suddenly.

  • Electricity in China is 220 Volts; the sockets are three-pin flat or two-pin round (as in the diagram) and may differ from those in some participants' home country. If so, please bring an adaptor-plug.

  • There is a Bank of China ATM in the NICC. Also, participants can pay by credit card in the hotel. However, most shops outside the hotel will not accept credit cards.

  • Travel insurance. Participants are advised to make their own arrangements for travel insurance, as appropriate for them, with their local insurance agency.
